28

What is 28?

I went on a cruise to celebrate my 29th birthday. While sitting on the balcony journaling my vacation, I had an  ”Aha” moment.   I decided to take advice from my family and bestie.  I decided share my poetry with the world in print form.  I decided to put it in a book.   I never felt any of my poetry was amazing, but they disagreed.  I’ve written over 50 poems, but never wanted to publish any because I didn’t want to be boxed in the ‘poet’ category.  This is why I’ve been hesitant on doing a poetry book.  I don’t want people to accept only that part of me like they do actors.

I turned 29 and didn’t cry at all like I do most birthdays.  I actually felt renewed, liberated, and cleansed.  I knew from that moment on I was ready to become a better writer.  This is when 28 was born.  I hadn’t written any poetry at 29 so I wanted my readers to know the me prior to now.  I wanted everyone to witness my growth while relating to my experiences.  I’m hoping one of my poems can heal someone from a broken heart, love, and losing who they are.

Most of the poems were written in 2009 when I did a 21 day challenge.  I also have the first poem I wrote at the age of 10.  I handpicked 28 of my favorite pieces to share.  I decided to only choose poems about love, with one exception because I wanted to revisit that 10 year old’s perception versus the 28 year old’s reality.  I’ve grown as a writer from the 10 year old girl who wrote her first poem about love.

I’m self publishing this book myself so I’m currently in the editing, pricing, and print phase.  Although the book is complete, I don’t want to release it until February around Valentine’s Day.  I invite you on this journey with me.

I’m so excited, blessed, and appreciative to everyone who’s heard my poetry and encouraged me to do something with it.  I’m also thankful to those whose presence in my life made them main characters.

Love,

Shenna

I’d like to share a Haiku that didn’t make it into the book…..
