5 Questions with Data of IKONS Magazine (LGBTQ Mover & Shaker)

“IKONS Magazine is a bold, in-depth, full-color quarterly online publication dedicated to the Black & Latino LBBT (lesbian, bi-sexual, bi-curious transgender) community, lifestyle and culture.  Each issue will provide our readers with vibrant illustrations capturing the lifestyle, music, culture and fashion as well as powerful articles and features surrounding major issues experienced by lesbians worldwide.  Through real-life experiences from women within the community we hope this magazine will inspire, educate, and enlighten it’s readers.  Meet amateur and veteran Hip-Hop, R&B Jazz, and Rock lesbian artist right here in IKONS Magazine.  Familiarize yourself with successful lesbian writers, business owners, professional athletes, artists, actress, fashion designers and political officials as you scroll through our e-zine.  Get the latest beauty tips, health issues surrounding women in general, movie, music and book reviews.

IKONS Magazine is like no other publication offered to women of color who partner with women.  That alone makes what we have to say relevant.  Through IKONS Magazine and our websites, we have the ability and the resources to provide not only a voice but a face to this community that has been under-serviced for so long.” -Data (In her words)

1- What motivates you?
My motivations start with me wanting something better for me and my family.  Secondly, I am motivated by my community. My lesbian community.   I would like to see us represented in more positive way.  Reaching that goal is something that keeps me motivated day to day.

2- What imprint would you like IKONS Magazine to leave on society as a whole?
Our imprint we would like to leave on society as a whole is to never judge a book by its cover. We would like to leave them with a better understanding of our community.

3- What saddens you about the current state of the LGBTQ community?
The more time I spend in the LGBTQ community, the more I dislike the lack of support for one another.  It is  tough to see us fighting with one another.  It’s sad that society already looks down upon us because of our lifestyle, now we’re hating on one another making someone’s plight for change within this community a tough one.  However, I believe it rest more on who we are as a people. Unfortunately, we have been trained to behave this way.  That good ole “Crab In A Barrel” theory is alive and continues to hold us down and stumps our growth.  You would think because we have it so hard as minority women, maybe it would be easier for us to come together for a common cause — homosexuality.  But nope!!!

4- What advice would you give LGBTQ youth?
Be proud of who you are, get educated because no one can take that away from you.  Walk with your head up and be proud of who you are.  Finish high school and work towards the betterment of YOU.

5- If you could change anything about the LGBTQ community, what would it be and why?
I would love to see a change in the way we interact and treat one another.  Let’s stop fighting against one another and help one another.
