Who is Shenna Nanette? “It was plain to see that a Kentucky born girl like me… “I visit pages often and notice About Me sections written in third person. It really gets under my skin because I feel the reader should know the person they’re reading about. Why would someone want to only know of the person through their representative? So here it goes: I was born in on September 26, 1982 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky at US Army Hospital. A melting pot boils inside of me, yet I’m content with the main ingredients of Curry Goat and Collard Greens (Jamerican.) While in the military my parents moved to Army based housing in Clarksville, Tennessee. I guess you can say my first three years were spent being an Army brat. My mom then moved us to Morgan City, Louisiana and there I wrote my first poem Love at 9. “What is Love? Is it when two hands touch? Is it really that much? Is it when two people kiss? When they leave each other what do they miss?…. “ That’s all I remember. I will always consider Morgan City home and if anyone asks, that’s where I’m from. My pen bleeds St. Mary Parish! I currently reside in New York and we’ve shared a great run, but our relationship is coming to an end. The south is calling me home! The next stop on my journey of life is Grad School. I plan to obtain my Masters in Education. Ultimately the title College Professor seems to be my calling as most would assume an author. I’ve always loved writing although I’ve never written anything that wows me. Sometimes writing and I disagree and she gives me the “block.” I think I’ve thrown away more of my work than kept or shared. We have a crazy, unexplainable, misunderstood, and beautiful relationship. I’m my own worst critic! With my writing, I don’t want to be wowed until I compose my “Final Scribe.” I only feel 100% myself while writing. I don’t have to worry about being judged or perceived the wrong way. I’m stripped, unrehearsed, vulnerable, excited, overwhelmed, perturbed, broken, uplifted, energized, guilty, innocent, but most of all HONEST when I write. This, my friends is Shenna Nanette, the writer so I ask, “Have you ever been in love with a writer?” However, there is more to me than writing. I’m a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and the list goes on. I love my family, I love my friends, and I love life! I’m so wrapped up and in love with Jesus first and foremost. I’m a HUMANITARIAN, activist, lover, fighter, dreamer, believer, but most of all a survivor. I’m into the promotion of the LGBTQ and Black communities. My mission is to contribute to positive growth in the
Black LGBTQ community with heavy focus on women as “WE” lack positive representation not only in media, but society as a whole. However, my support and contributions to causes and organizations extend outside the aforementioned communities. If I could, I’d like to change one person’s life because I believe in “PAYING IT FOWARD!” All it takes is one voice to reach hundreds, and those hundreds will reach thousands, and those thousands will reach…… This, my friends is another portion of Shenna Nanette. But wait, there’s more! I would love to network with other positive LGBTQ, Blacks, Women, People, and LIFE in general. They say it takes a village to raise a family. So let’s create a city and change the world, 1 step at a time. I’m not really into the party scene, but I enjoy traveling and seeing the world. There’s one thing I love most about NY… DIVERSITY! Believe it or not Manhattan and Brooklyn inspire me most. I love visiting museums to experience different Continents in one sitting. I went to Miami for the first time May 2009 and I wrote on the Ocean. For the first time, I tasted freedom. My dream was to always write on the Pacific Ocean, but the Atlantic was amazing. Yet, the Pacific is still calling. I’d like to share that scribe here: “White sand exfoliates my heels as I walk towards water so blue, so pure, and so innocent; its life. Heat causes me to strip extra layers and enter this ocean’s freedom. I walk forward as the wetness rises. As the blueness covers the top of my breasts, I look down and I can see the purple painted on my toes and all 24 of my permanent stars. Just like the water, I haven’t felt this way in years.. Just like the water my life has just become crystal clear… Thank you Miami” ©2009 Shenna Nanette
So who is Shenna Nanette? I’m still getting to know her, but I must say I love the person she’s becoming.
If you or anyone you know is in search of a writer or editor for an upcoming project, please feel free to email me at info@shennananette.com. I’m also available for other positive networking projects.
